  1. There were a few hedge schools in this[?] district. The people used to call them "night schools" because they were held in the evening. There was one in Mick Keeffe's farm in the corner of a field in Curraraigue and there was another one in Mick Twohigs field in Crinaloo. The schools were held in farmers' houses during the winter. The writing was done on slate with slate pencils and there was a stone used for a blackboard. There was a man named Micheal Callaghan[?] teaching in the school in Curraigue. He was a stranger. He used to lodge in the farmers' houses around in their turn. His pay was a penny in the week and it was given to him in the end of three. The subjects taught were reading, writing and arithmetic and they were taught in English. The children used to sit on stones.
