    "As blind as Dan Murphy's goat." Dan Murphy lived at Lyre one time and it is said that he kept a blind goat for many years.
    "He might as well be hitting his head against a stone-wall." This is said of a person who is trying to accomplish an almost impossible feat.
    "As deaf as Jack Croinin's pig." Though this saying is used rather frequently nobody seems to know who Jack Croinin was.
    "As wicked as the Kanturk cats" This is said of very hot tempered people.
    Other very common proverbs are:
    "An empty house is better than a bad tenant."
    "Smooth waters run deep."
    "The early bird catches the worm."
    "Gentlemen's steps are very slippery."
    "There is no time for thinking when there is heavy work to be done"

    "As stiff as a poker." "As dead as a stone."
    "As cross as a bag of weasels" "As black as a crow."
    "As sly as a fox." "As wild as a hare."
    "As early as the lark." "As pale as a candle."
    "As old as hills" "As blind as a bat by day"
