    populated, before the famine, and also because potatoes, were the chief food then.
    It was a great disappoint-ment to the farmers, after working hard sowing the seed when, to find when they went to pick the fruits of their labour, that the potatoes had rotted in the ground. Owing to the shortage of food, people developed terrible diseases, such as fever and pneumonia.
