- The famine brought a terrible starvation to this district. The potato crop failed and so there were no potatoes. It was the blight that was the cause of it. All the stalks fell away and the potatoes rotted. The population was very great at the time. Some of the other crops gave away also. There was a lot of sickness in the district from the shortage of good. A lot of people died at that time. The people had very little to eat. All they had to eat was brown flour.
