- The most historic place in the parish of Ballingarry is the War House. It stands 900 ft. above sea level. It received its name when Smyth O'Brien raised the standard of rebellion against the English laws in the year 1848. On that memorable day in July Smyth O'Brien, McManus, Lyin, James Stephens and others were addressing the insurgents in the village of Commons when a considerable force of constabulary under the command of count inspector Thrant, marched our of Callan to arrest the leaders.
