    'Twas a fine October evening,
    In the vale where Anner flows,
    Autumn's tint was on the leaves-
    All fruit except the sloes
    Were falling off the binding stem -
    The sun had sank to rest
    And scarce a babbling ripple stirred
    Upon the river's breast.

    In that quiet and peaceful valley,
    That river glides along,
    An old and hoary ruin beside
    Where oft the vassal's song,
    Bisturbed the evening's stillness when
    The rightful lord held away,
    O'er acres broad extending there-
    A stranger's claim to-day.
