  1. (I)
    Sing us the songs our fathers sung
    When Erin's sons were free,
    The harp upon her banner shone -
    Guard of her ministrelsy -
    And chieftans sat below her bards
    In rows of man and keep,
    While vassals crowded lordly halls
    And wassail bowls flowed deep.

    (II)
    They sang us not the "la - di - das"
    Our modern ballrooms know -
    The insipid themes our courtly dames
    Now lisp in gas-light glow;
    They (?) no lordly vices nor
    Plebian blades pass'd o'er,
    But smote the one, and th'other sung
    To music's richest store.
