When the tenants heard of this they all stood in amaze
And with a look of scorn at this naughty boy they gazed
They said make it even money and we'll pay you on the nail
You're as bad as your old father with his lb. of yellow "male"
Captain Hayden* he is a man both mild and keen
He called unto his band boys all and dressed them up in green
Their medals bright like stars by night he paid without a frown
And he paid unto his comrades all we'll keep bad landlords down
*Captain Hayden was a native of Kilbrahan, Kilmanagh. He organized a band of flutes and drums. He was the leader and used dress in quaint clothes something like a captain - an army captain. That is how he got the title "Captain". This band attended all the evictions in the neighbourhood.
The ballad is taken down exactly as I heard it from my father, John Luttrell.
