  1. In olden times people did not eat nearly as many meals as they do now, and that may "account for the fact that they lived longer, and were a good deal stronger than the people of the present generation.
    They usually had two meals, one early in the morning and one before going to bed and if they were working in the fields, they brought a couple of thick slices of bread with them, and they had a drink of water from the nearest well. Potatoes and milk were taken at practically every meal, and the potatoes were thrown in a heap on the middle of the table. The milk usually drunk was buttermilk as it was considered to be very wholesome.
    Meat was very seldom eaten; unless bacon or a wild animal such as a rabbit or a hare. Before tea became common a drink made from dandelions was frequently used. Oaten meal broth was also common as well as being very wholesome.
