“There was an old school at Casey's gate in the height inside the road, ...”
There was an old school at Casey's gate in the height inside the road, it was thatched with rushes and scraws and it had stone walls. The name of the teacher was Patrick Liddy a native of Ballanacarra. The teacher used to sit on a box and all the pupils around him and when the pupils used to be writing they had two long planks joined together and resting on two square stones. They used to write with quills and ink and some times with gravel and a slate. If any of the pupils spoke a word of Irish they would get three or four slaps. Each scholar had to bring sixpence a week or two shillings a month. He used to teach English, Latin, and sums. In the night time he used to go around to each pupil teaching them lessons.
