    By few for virtue or for worth excelled,
    Who propped my weak ideas, made them spring
    That in due time they might a harvest bring.
    Where Science, Wisdom, ope the golden page
    That clowns might learned be, and idiots sage.
    His was the soul benevolent and kind,
    The warm heart, the open, gen'rous mind;
    Sincere he was, in friendship fond and free,
    And all that any virtuous man could be.
    Ah! whither now is flown each happy scene?
    The noisy pupils on the sportive green,
    And till the unwelcome bell renewed its call
    I own myself the noisiest of them all.
    How oft within the garden did I stray
    And there pluck Summer's choicest fruits away.
    Just as the bee avoids the faded flower
    I chose the sweet and cast away the sour;
    Then to my studies silently would lie
    With cautious step, and watchful rolling eye.
    There happiness amusement did abound
    And learning dealt her precious store around;
    But dearer scenes must now employ my mind
    Fond recollection leaves them not behind.
    My Birth-place - were it on a mountain brow
    Near some rude rock where foaming torrents flow;
    Or were it on the wild sea-beaten shore
