    Where Ocean fair would kiss my cottage door;
    Nay in a desert by the stormy sea,
    Yet as my birthplace it is dear to me.
    Shall I forget the well-known beauteous square,
    The sweet resort of all the gay and fair;
    There see the far-famed Scatt'rys holy isle
    With bosom deck'd by many a mossy pile;
    Its venerable tower soaring high
    Inspires with awe, with wonder strikes the eye.
    And in that spot for Heaven's use designed
    The bones of Martyrs, Hermits, lie enshrined.
    There too the relics of Senanus blest
    Tradition tells us found an earthly rest.
    Lo! yonder building once the traveller's home
    A wrecked, deserted, solitary dome,
    As some proud tyrant king who lost his crown
    Its pride is fallen, and it tumbles down,
    No more that lovely shape, with book in hand
    Shall from its window watch the desert strand.
    While thus the Muse its former pomp recalls
    The whistling wind loud bellows through its walls;
    There let it stand to hoary time a prey,
    And o'er its sides an ivy robe display.
    Now fancy paints that pleasing shore to view
    Where lies the winding path to Islevaros(?);
    Ah! from my memory nothing shall efface
