This was constructed by turning the uprights or ribs across from both sides, and weaving them with other rods. The basket was the measure adopted in many places as the standard before the introduction of the 'lever' into the towns and villages. Even at the present time we have the 4 st '' basket, 8 st '' basket, 10 stone '' basket, and the largest the 12 stone basket. So the ciseán in olden days was the standard measure especially for weighing potatoes, turnips and mangolds. It was a most useful article to the farmers and the cottiers, and even the businessman in the town. Where early potatoes are grown they are as a rule carried to the market in baskets.
