“My father lived in West-meath.”
My father lived in West-meath. When he was young he saw his mother go out every fine Saturday to collect rushes for the making of candles. She went to a "boggy" place or to the edge of a river and pulled rushes. She tied them in bundles and took them home. When she arrived home she peeled them except for a strip on the back to keep the rush from breaking. There was tallow which they got from the fat of animals and it was melted in a grisset and they dipped the rushes in it. Then they were left to dry over a fire.- Collector
