- There lived a man in Ardbraccan called Donnelly, he died in the year 1933, his house was situated on a road called Lady's Walk near St Ultan's Well he was known best as Donnelly The Basket Maker, he made clothes baskets, large ones and small ones, and cradles for babies. The sally rods grew in his own garden at the back of the house, he had also sallies growing on little islands in the River Blackwater at the back of the Martry Milly, the islands are called the Sallie Islands, his son still owns the islands and makes a few articles from the sallies.
I never saw Donnelly making baskers but I saw some of the ones he made, he made them with twelve rods, for a big basket and six for a small one he put them standing up straight and turned them to made the bottom and then joined them with two or four thin sallies, he then works the lighter ones in and out through the stronger sallies he made four rows like that and then he(continues on next page)- Collector
