- All the houses were thatched in this district in olden times. The thatch was got from straw of oats. They used to have a settle bed in the kitchen. It was placed against the wall near the fire. The chimney and the fireplace were at the gable end. The front of the chimney was made of clay and wattles. The old people never heard of houses having no chimneys.
