- (continued from previous page)decayed potatoes.My grandfather says that his uncle often told him that they could not see the door with beggars and they all starving with the hunger. He also told me that when his uncle was going out to herd one morning he found a man lying dead in the field. He nailed up a few boards in the shape of a coffin and buried the man in the field. One day a poor woman came to the door and she had a little child with her. The child was dying of hunger. There were some pigs in the pig-sty eating from a trough. The woman put the child in to the pig-sty and he ate with the pigs. There was another famine in 1879 due to partial failure of the potato-crop, but it was nothing compared with the Great Famine of 1846 and 1847.It is said that times were so bad in a place called Crissaun which is a townland one(continues on next page)
