  1. In preparation for the potato-planting the farmer selects his seed potatoes. These he makes sure are free from "mixtures" that is potatoes of different variety. Any too large or ill-shaped potatoes are also discarded. The potatoes are then cut into pieces, each piece containing an "eye" or two, because from the eyes the buds come. When the potatoes are too small to cut they are put down as they are.
