  1. Long ago there was a great deal of superstition connected with fairs.
    Once a man had started on his way to a fair he was on no account to turn back. If he did he was sure to meet with some bad luck that day, and also if the first person he met was a redhaired woman he would, he thought, have bad luck. But if he met a man first he was sure to have good luck and he would ask the man to run back a few steps with him.
    Then when the fair had gathered it was a most noisy place. The shouts of the buyers mingled with the slapping of hands caused a great noise.
