    him no mercy would be shown to him; but nevertheless he turned back to the little church which was now empty and lonely.
    He got the Crucifix and silently and slowly stole out of the church with the relic clasped reverently to his breast. He was seen by a Cromwellian soldier who at once noticed the Crucifix.
    He took careful aim and shot the little boy who when falling flung the Crucifix into a lake.
    The Crucifix was recovered some years afterwards by a fisherman. To-day it can be seen hanging on the altar in the Church at Lady's Island.
