    About two acres of land are sown under potatoes each year.

Arran banners, Arran Chiefs and Kerr's Pinks are the names given to the types of potatoes most common in the district. Long ago, potatoes were used instead of starch by grating a raw potato and straining the grated substance through a muslin cloth.
