- (continued from previous page)a mass rock. It is large flat stone on which the Holy Sacrifice was offered in the penal times. On the rocks around, sentries were placed to warn the priest if the red-coats appeared. There is a well near by. Its water will cure a vomiting. There was an old chapel in Castlerahan grave yard over 100 years ago, before the present chapel was built.
There was a mass path from Aughrim through Mullaghmore, Cornacrave and Cormeen to that old chapel. The new road made in 1847 called the New Line did away with the mass path. Priests always said mass in houses, and this custom continued up until about 20 years ago. - In the penal days there was a graveyard in Love's field beside Michael Dolan's house Clonkeefy. A priest used to say Mass every week there at a rock in the corner of the field. A large congregation of people attended the Mass each Sunday. It is known as a chapel field since. The rock is there yet and the tombstones also.
