  1. The local fairs are held monthly in Oldcastle Virginia and Ballyjamesduff for this area. Since these towns were built the fairs have been held there. Before Ballyjamesduff was built, fairs were held at the Moate Castleraham and Rassan below Ballyjamesduff. These fairs are now discontinued. There is no tradition around here of fairs held anywhere else. battle were not so plentiful as they are now. As sheep were reared by all small and large farmers. The woolen trade was followed and sheep were fed principally for their wool. In oldcastle there is a green where cattle are bought and sold but in the towns of Virginia and Ballyjamesduff the fairs are held in the streets. Luck money is given in all cases. It is called a lucky penny and very often a tight bargain is made for a luck penny from 6 to 10s according to price of animal. When a bargain is made the parties show their agreement by striking hands. "Here hold out your hand" So much take it on leave it, one of the parties says striking the other on the hand. When animals are sold they are now marked with raddle but long ago the
