The mark of a cross was cut on the cake, so as to keep the cake from breaking round the sides. The names oven, bacus, pot oven, and bastable were given to the vessels in which bread was baked.
In olden times bread was often baked standing on a support in front of the fire. This support was made of iron bars, supported by a prop griddle bread was also made. If visitors arrived at a house unexpectedly pancakes were always made.
