- Once upon a time a shark was following a ship a considerable distance. This was considered an evil omen, and usually foretold disaster to the ship.
The crew were therefore annoyed, and decided to throw a goat to the shark. The shark soon swallowed the goat, but immediately pursued the ship again.
On board the vessel was a very old woman, who was very ill, and in all probability would die. To save the rest of the people on board, the crew now decided to throw the old lady out, thinking she might appease the shark. The great fish swallowed her also, but came rapidly after the ship once more.
The captain now became very angry, and took the chair he was sitting on and threw it with great force at the shark. This was also swallowed, but the shark was not satisfied and still kept following.
However, after some time, the crew managed to capture the shark, and on opening it, found the old woman sitting on the chair milking the goat.- Collector
