  2. In some years after the "Hedge schools" there was a National school established in the townland of Carrickgorman in Mr. John Connell's farm, and Mr. William Flanagan was the teacher, his school was a small thatched house and his pay about ten pounds a year, there were children of all dominations attending it, and got a very good education at it; later the same school was changed to Togher, there was a black board and a map, and the children had all slates and pencils for doing their sums on, and copy books for writing in, everyone had to pay one shilling and three pence every three months
