  1. (continued from previous page)
On the day of my trial
To the bench the car man swore
A hatchet I had in my hand
When I gave her the blow
And still I was found guilty
    No better I deserved.
    Near Tallow I was born
    That is my native place
I never thought I would have brought
    My parents to disgrace
    Until this cursed murder
    I have done most wickedly
    Could people all be satisfied
    To live in poverty.
    My name is William Haley
    My age is twenty one
    I never injured any man
    Nor ever did any wrong
    Until this cruel murder
    I have done most shamefully
    Could people all be satisfied
    To live in poverty.
Now I'm going to part this life
    There's one request I crave
To have this put on my headstone
When I am in my grave.
