- In the olden times bread was made from wheat, rye, and corn. Flour was made locally from wheat. The people in the district remember querns to be used in grinding. The different kinds of bread that were made are:- stampy, potato-cake, paka, and boxty-bread. It was a custom in the olden times when the potatoes were dug that in every house they used have stampy for every meal that day. Milk was always used in the kneading to make the bread soft. In this district it was a custom to bake bread every day except Sunday because there was always enough bread made on Saturdays to hold until Monday. The bread was baked in an oven or griddle.
