1. Fairy Forts

   

   Roinn Roinn Postáil

   There are three forts in my district, namely Derry baslte, Lisesker, and Fahuns. There is sometimes underground passages leading out to a mountain from them. There were three washer women in Derry baslte about fifty years ago. Their names were not known. Their regular beetling place was Woodfield lake, the bridge at the river, and a stream in Micheal Helley’s land. There were two different crowds of people seen in different parts of the road around Derry castle fort. Once a man was going on a sick call, the night was very dark, and he brought a candle with him. Every time he got to a certain point on the road the candle would quench. This thing happened twice, and the third time he brought a blessed candle with him and it remained lit until he met the forest. The banshee used to be heard up till lately. They used to cry for different families. They most known ones were, Kelly’s Snees, and Hynes, and their intermarriage with other families. They could see the funerals and coffins.
   There is also a fort near my townland which is called baiseal Ard. There is another one in Woodfield, which is in view of another one which is
