- (continued from previous page)and then the people had a few meals of them.When people were about to have a meal in ancient times, a big pot of porridge was boiled and placed in the middle of the floor. Then the members of the house sat on the floor around the pot and ate from noggins and tin saucepans.The bread eaten by the people was made from oatmeal and a little water. It was baked on a griddle, but it was sometimes baked by being placed against a flag before the fire. Later on people began to eat bread, known as "boxty". When making this bread, a few raw, peeled potatoes were scraped into a vessel. This was put into a cloth and the water squeezed out of it. This was(continues on next page)
