- Potatoes are grown on our farms. There are always three acres sown every year.
It is our servant man prepares the ground for the potatoes. Some people scatter the manure on the field before it is ploughed and some scatter it in the drills. Wooden ploughs were common about 70 years ago. The spades were bought in shops. The drills are opened with the plough and the manure is scattered in the drills of it is not ploughed down before.
Sometimes the neighbours help one another to get in the potatoes.
The potatoes are harrowed and grubbed and hoed and moulded in the Summer months. The potatoes are dug with spades and potato diggers and when dug the potatoes are put in a pit and covered with rushes and clay.
There are a lot of different kinds of potatoes viz:- Arran banners, Kerrs pink, Gladstones, Arran victor, Arran chiefs, Suttons, Up to Dates, Brown rocks and a lot of other kinds. Kerrs pink and arran banners are grown best in this district.- Bailitheoir
