The blacksmith told us that there is a swallow's nest in his forge. There are two clutches of swallows reared there every year. The first clutch migrates. The second clutch hides in old castles and buildings. They hang out of a perch and seem to sleep all the winter. The smith says that it must be one of these that comes to the old nest a couple of days before the others return across the sea. He has great welcome for the others. They start at once to fix up the old nest. He says that all the swallows gather in Waterford before they depart. Their first and only nest is in Spain. They reach South Africa in hours he says.
