- The Famine affected this district very much, as it is a rather backward area, and in those times there was not proper communication or proper means of conveying provisions to these backward places. In the town land of Mullaghmore where I live there are twelve families presently, while one hundred years ago there was thirty. The ruins of these old homesteads surrounded by nettles and weeds are all plain to be seen. Many old bushes and water pipes along the roads are called in remembrance of people who were found dead there in the Famine years, such as Quinn's bush, Barrett's Pipes and Cairlín's Bridge.
The only food the people could rely on for their support was potatoes and milk, as the wheat and oats had to be sold to pay the rent. The blight came on the stalks when they were in full bloom and the farmers did not know of any means to prevent it(continues on next page)- Collector
