- In olden times people had three meals - Breakfast, Dinner and Supper. Very long ago all the meals consisted of potatoes and sour milk. Then, afterwards, potatoes were used for the morning and mid-day meal and gruel was eaten for the supper.
The gruel was made when the day's work was finish - Water was boiled in a pot or 'skillet' to which a good pinch of salt was added; yellow meal was then added gradually and mixed well with a wooden spoon. It was left over the fire to boil for a good while. They all then got a nice plate of gruel and saucepan of milk.
Meat was only used rarely. The potatoes were mostly eaten with salt. The potatoes were peeled and dipped in salt. This was called 'potatoes and peck the table'. Sometimes salt was put into a saucer of milk and the potatoes dipped in it. The meat generally used was bacon or salted beef. It was not used until it was very hard.
