- During the period of the penal days, the Irish people were not allowed ot be educated, and there were no Government schools, then to provide education; so in some districts, some of the boys, and girls went to what were then known as 'Hedge Schools'. Hedge Schools hours were generally kept very quietly, and sometimes were held late at night.
During the hours, the master taught, some boy always had to keep a watch, not knowing but their privacy might be invaded on, and in such a case, the master, especially, would be punished by the authorities of that time.
There was one such school held in Ballykealy. The first school master, who taught there, as the people now remember, was Mr Walsh a native of Ballykealy. Later came Mr. Gorman, whose name the field, where school was held, now takes. The first school master Mr Walsh was a grandfather, of the present Mr James Walsh, of Upper Ballykealy.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
