- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)Later little schools were built in secluded spots, and the hedge school master worked hard for the benefit of the children. He usually got shelter and food in some near by farmhouse. Neither Mr Gorman nor Mr Walshe got any pay from the Government so the children were required to pay a fee for their education, Every quarter each child brought three shillings and very often he got presents of butter and eggs from those who could afford it.
The subjects taught by these men were English, Geography, Grammar and Arithmetic. The children wrote with slates-pencils on slates.
These schoolmasters were welcomed in every farmhouse of the locality, as the Irish had esteem for education. This esteem was shown, too, in the way the children attended the school.
It is the proud boast of the people of Ballykealy, to be able to point out to strangers, the remains of this hedge school, for even now though the remains are hardly noticeable, they are cherished relics of the past.
