- "Local proverbs"
Long ago in Ireland people had a good many proverbs and these are a few that were handed down to us.
'It's an ill-wind blows nobody good."
Once a little boy was ill in bed and could only look out on the busy street at the people passing to and fro. It happened that a lady and her little boy were passing by. The little boy was swinging a lovely blue balloon in the air holding a string at one end. The lady had corrected him a few times, until at last the wind swept it from his hand and it lodged on the railing of the sick boy's house. When the other boy had got permission from the landlady to get the balloon. he found he had to go into the room where the boy lay ill, so when he saw the sad face of the boy he gave him the balloon which set the poor boy dancing with joy and both parents related the above mentioned proverb.
Other proverbs are-
