- The greatest storm known in Ireland swept through the country on 6th January 1839. Almost every person suffered damage. Many lives were lost. Where cattle and sheep were near rivers or drains they were swept in and drowned. Roofs were blown off houses and haggards and trees were knocked.
A fair was being held in Ballinagar Co. Roscommon on the following day and the sheep which were being driven there were swept off the road and weren't found for weeks after on account of the drifting snow. A show-board was swept about sixty miles from Westport to Castlerea.
I got this account from my Aunt who heard it from her father Mr. John McNeill, and he heard it from his father Mr. Edward McNeill, who died about the year 1876, and who was about the age of 80 years when he died.- Bailitheoir
