“About a quarter of a mile from my house...”
(ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)is where the priest said Mass in the Penal Days. The stone on which Mass was offered is yet to be seen, in a very hollow place. Outside the town is another Poll-an-Aifrinn in the Hermitage.
Near Ballymoe there is a field called "Currach". At the junction of the River Suck and the Island River which flows at the back of Ballymoe, there is a field called "Móin Mór". It is a very level swampy stretch of ground. It is a very historical place, for here the sea is supposed to have been by which the people crossed the river before the bridge was built and it was here the chieftain, Mógha had his fort and from whom Béal-Átha-Mogha got its name.
From the appearance of the land which is low lying on both sides it is very likely that the water stretched out much wider than it is at present. When Roderick O'Connor the last High King of Ireland was reigning, his son rebelled against him and joined the English forces. His father on hearing this gathered an army and marched to punish his rebel son who had reached Tuam.
