- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)Nail-making.
There was a nail industry carried on in Ballymoe long ago. All kinds of nails were made. They were sold all over Connaught and were remarkable for their lasting quality. In the making of shoe nails a thin rod of iron was heated until it was white. There was a bar of iron with the shape of a nail in one end and the iron was pressed into the shape. This formed it into a nail. Those nails were very dear but their quality was far better than those of the present day. The owners of the forge are still there but the industry is not continued.
Soap-making.
Long ago people also made their own soap. They boiled resin and tallow. When these materials had melted they set the material in a cool place to set. Then they cut it out in squares and used it for washing.
