- I do not know was the district thickly populated before the famine. The famine was caused by the failure of the crops. The potatoes rotted in the ground. The people were very poor and hundreds died with the hunger in Ireland.
People still point out the ruins of houses which were caused by the famine. Indian meal was given as relief to the people when the work-houses were crowded out. Government relief reached every district. Great sickness followed the famine. There was no account of the seed potatoes for the following year, they were sent over from England.
