- The district was very thickly populated before the famine. People still point out the ruins of houses which were caused by the famine. In some places villages were deserted and the people emigrated to America. No blight fell on the potatoes,they rotted in the ground. There was no account of the seed potatoes for the following year, they were sent over from England. They were stuck in ridges. The people had oat meal instead to eat but a number of them died with hunger and sickness.
Government relief reached every district, and people still talk of the famine and distress,
