- Long ago people had no lamps like they have nowadays.The only light they had was splenters which were made out of verr. They were got in the turf bogs.
People found big blocks of verr in the bogs and dried them and then cut them in lengths of about two feet. They then made splenters of it.
When night came they lit the splenters as we light our lamps and each person in their turn held the splenter in their hands. Other people later made candles from tallow.
the tallow was got when they killed a cow and put the tallow into a vessel and melted. Then the wick was put into a mold and the tallow was poured into the mold and left there until it was hard.
They put a hole in the fireplace between two stones and(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
