  1. In the days of the sailing ships Crookhaven harbour was famous as a port of call for the ships of the world. The men of Crookhaven in former years were noted mariners and sailed the Seven Seas. Therefore the old stories and traditions are mostly connected with ships and voyages. The following is a typical example of the narratives remembered by the older inhabitants of the village.
    Some ships I remember
    I will give a few names of sailing ships that the seamen of my native place sailed in in the days of sail. In my young days there were a number of small vessels belonging to Crookhaven, pilot-cutters, lighthouse tenders, smacks and schooners, and those that I remember were the Auspicious, Caroline, Halcyon, Heroine, Kate Dawson, Kingston, Lady Dentry, Mary Rowe, Mazeppa, Meteor, Nina, Osprey,
