- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)townland of Gurteenakilla, about three and a half miles north of the village of Ballydehob. The teacher's name was Mr Martin. At that time there were no steel pens in use and the pupils wrote with quills which they got from the wing of a goose and which they made into the shape of a nib. The points of these pens were not very suitable for writing as they were wery broad, but at that period they were considered great pens and could not be broken. They write very heavily and did not hold much ink. They had no blackboard in the school but had a very large oblong white smooth board which they wrote on, but very seldom. The teacher had only a very slow method of teaching the pupils. Sometimes he taught them one by one and at other times two by two.At present there is no trace of the school but in its place there stands a cowhouse and a stable. The buildings belong to my father and where the schoolyard was there is now a farmyard and an old dwelling house.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
