   When potatoes came into this district first they cut the stalks when they were green and boiled them. The dinner was served long ago, before tables came into use, by putting a large sack on the floor and the potatoes were put on the sack. Then the family sat round on the floor and they enjoyed their meal without forks, knives or plates. They also used salt with the potatoes. In some farm houses they had plates and the farmer and his wife ate off the one plate. The table was hinged to the wall and it had only one leg which was also hinged. When not in use the table was lifted up against the wall and held there with a wooden clamp, the leg lying against the side of the table. Later on, the wheat was ground by hand, between two round, smooth stones. A small hole was bored in the top stone to hold a wooden peg which served as a handle. These stones were called querns.
