Historical TraditionDuring the famine there live in Dreenaclough a family named Hurley. There was a father, mother and four children in the family. They got a fever and all were in bed with it except the mother and she had it too but she had to look after the rest. She came down to Ballydehob for messages and fainted in the shop while she was waiting to be served. When she recovered she went home and the father died shortly after. All the rest recovered and the children were too small to work the land so she went to the workhouse with her children. While there, the tow boys disobeyed orders and were punished with a "cat of nine tails". They were put on another boys back and stripped bare and whipped with this.
