  1. One Sunday in the month of August of last year I visited the Old Head Lighthouse. Although the Lighthouse itself in a beautiful example of modern engineering the headland is well worth a visit. It is nearly cut off from the mainland at Garrettstown and only a marsh connects it with the mainland.
    As you advance out along the headland there is not a habitation to be seen and very rarely you see a goat or a couple of sheep grazing on the side of a precipice. Although it seems to the visitor to be a place shunned by man, beast and vegetation at present it was not always so and many romantic tales are told about pirates and smugglers and early settlers who came to this country. About midway out on the headland it becomes very narrow and slopes almost vertically down to the sea on both sides. Across this part of the headland the pirates built a high wall with two towers on each side of the gateway. Underneath this part of the headland is an enormous tunnel through which boats
