“Bandon Bridge was the name given to the new town by the English but the Irish would not listen to it.”
Matter supplied by:-
Mr Stephen Crowley,
School Teacher,
Bandon.Written down by self.Bandon Bridge was the name given to the new town by the English but the Irish would not listen to it. The town was there no doubt and so was the bridge by then. The country belonged to the O'Mahonys from time out of mind, and they could not understand why a foreign people, who came from a foreign land, and spoke a foreign tongue, should now call it theirs.Droichead Mahon (O'Mahon's Bridge) was its name and so long have they continued to so call it in remembrance of the old proprietors that despite history, geography, schools, banks, the Post Office - it is not uncommon in the surrounding country even yet, for a wayfarer, on his return from the fair or market in Bandon to be asked (in Irish) whether the price of cattle or pigs were high or low in Droichead Mahon.- Bailitheoir
