  1. Flood. In the month of July or August 1892, the greatest flood ever known in this district occurred. The day was very warm, and in the afternoon the heat became intense. Suddenly the sky became clouded, and faint peals of thunder were heard, with occasional flashes of lightning. This quickly increased in severity, and in a very short time the thunder was deafening, and the country side a sheet of flame from almost continuous flashes of forked lightning. After about an hour the air seemed to get a little cooler, and drops of rain commenced to fall, at first lightly, to be instantly followed by such a downpour, as had never before been seen by the oldest inhabitants of the district. This mid-summer day had become almost as dark as night, and in short time the streams and roads in the locality were turned into raging torrents, sweeping all before them. Several cattle, and many cocks of hay were destroyed by the lightning, and numbers of sheep and lambs were drowned. When the floods abated, the fields by the river banks, and some of the roads were strewn with fish. Miles of the public road were completely washed away, and had to be closed to traffic for several months, until the necessary repairs had been completed. The Lacklown River was so flooded, that it swept a rock a ton weight, from Cash's quarry at Carrigeen, for half a mile further down. Trout were found in the gravel thrown up on Mr Kiely's inch at the Ball-ally. Munanreel Bridge, and Fr Murphy's bridge at Shronbeha were practically swept away.
